E3 06: World Tour Soccer '06 Hands-On

  • World Tour Soccer '06 is on show in the PlayStation Portable booth for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, and that we went in straight away to investigate this handheld football game. Currently 90 percent through development, the sport is due for release in June 2006, and we'd a hands-on play ahead of the show doors opened.

Jumping straight in to the classic challenge mode, the overall game is all about playing stylishly and can award points depending on your Warmane Gold performance. Making basic passes will enable you to get between 10 and 30 points, that may appear on top of the recipient player's head. At halftime, we had been told our target score was 500 points, but our lackluster passing and 0-0 draw meant we earned a measly 325.
The controls inside the game are similar to most major football titles, and it may be played with either analogue or digital control. Depending on offense/defense, triangle is used in either a through ball or possibly a goalie rush; square is shoot or slide tackle; circle is cross or block tackle; and X is pass or switch player. The left shoulder button is used as being a skill toggle, so should you hold it and press one from the face buttons, the participant will feint, shimmy, or knock the ball forward. Do this facing an opposing player for the point bonus. The right shoulder button is useful for running in case you hold it down, while a tap will knock the ball forward.
While the gamers are modeled in fairly low detail, the animation is great and helps to make the game a great deal of fun to try out. It plays a lot more Pro Evolution Soccer than FIFA, with both shooting and cross power depending on how long you own the relevant button down. The point system keeps your play focused and causes you to try to utilize the skill button greater than you otherwise would. Presentation is certainly not that would worry the FIFA series, but replays are handled with slick video transitions. There are no referees or linesmen to view, in case you make a really vicious tackle, you may see the participant stay about the ground for several seconds. The stadium detail can be quite basic though, without any crowd animation aside from your odd camera flash, as well as the substitute animations are extremely basic, while using new player simply jumping up and down for the sideline.
The strategic changes you'll be able to make are limited, but they are simple to find and nicely presented. In the team management menu, you'll be able to select your players, make substitutions, to see their attributes. The attributes are broken into four categories, those being physical, technical, mental, and goalkeeping. Also, you'll be able to see individual player ages, height, weight, and footedness. The player positions are mapped out for the pitch, so you may see which areas each one is covering, although should you use the far camera mode in-game, you are able to see many players onscreen.
